I've Seen The Needle And The Damage Done.

Entry 1     10:00 a.m.

On or about Memorial Day I cut my foot with a shard of decorative glass that I stepped on in the basement while doing laundry. It fucking hurt. I had Jenny pull out the shard,  a la Androcles and the Lion.  I thought she had gotten all of it.

Unfortunately, the wound didn't heal, nor did the pain subside. So, last night, after much prodding, I went to urgent care.  I couldn't bear much weight on the foot.

The x-ray showed a foreign body.  The PA who saw me decided to numb my foot and remove the debris.  Mary, Holy Mother of Jesus did the three injections into the ball of my foot hurt.  I was warned, but wasn't prepared. Fuck, who could be?  I screamed and clutched the handles of the birthing bed they had placed me on, and made sounds like I was being stabbed to

death.  The needle was incredibly long, went incredibly deep into my foot.  I moved, involuntarily, from the pain of each injection. The cut is in the pad of my foot, and Jesus, Mary and Joseph if I could have kicked the PA, I would have.

The good news is, using the scalpel, it took less than a minute or three to rid my foot of the foreign body, which was tiny and which I got to keep.

Problem solved, I was free to go.  I got home and was ebullient. I could walk without pain. Then around 12:30 a.m., the drug used to numb my foot stopped working.  I mean 1000 percent stopped.  My foot began to throb, ache and hurt.  I got up to get ibuprofen, I could not bear weight on my foot. It felt like someone was pumping air into it to the point of bursting.  I hopped to the couch, elevated my foot and managed to fall asleep after about two more hours.

I woke at 5 in pain and, pogo sticking on one leg, somehow got to the bathroom and back, laid down with my foot still throbbing.

I'm pretty sure now that its infected and surprised they didn't culture it.

Fun fun fun.

  1. Dear God, man! I think you need to invest in some bubble wrap. Of course it’s infected! I can’t believe they didn’t culture it and/or put you on an antibiotic.
