"Kathy, I'm lost," I said, though I knew she was sleeping

Entry 1 San Francisco, April 2017.   The weather the last few days has been amazing. It's nearly 6 p.m., spring starting later tonight, and the front door is wide open. There isn't a cloud in the sky, a breeze with a slight chill is blowing. Abby is downstairs, the dog isn't barking. A rather good day, I would admit.  The Cure just won't get out of my head. I really wish I could find the courage to let it all go. Moving will help, I think. Keep your fingers crossed, the odds I will move to Portland are looking better than even. The recruiter, ever optimistic, thinks I may be flown down as early as Friday. I hope not, given Abby is here, but she will understand.  Meanwhile, I learned yesterday that my lazy  boss is, well, lazy. He told me last week that he asked if my temporary status Seward Street Slides, 2017. could be extended so I wouldn't have a break in service and thus not go unpaid, and was told he could. Yesterday, he told me he was wrong. I pressed him, an...

I've Been Looking So Long At These Pictures Of You

Entry 1 Long ago, it must be I have a photograph Preserve your memories They're all that's left you         -from Bookends by Simon and Garfunkel Leiney at S. Lucile Street, June 2004. From the time that we got our first digital camera, until the kids were in their early teens, I took more digital snaps than most can gauge. Tens of thousands, maybe hundreds of thousands of images and videos exist that no one has ever seen. I would take the pictures and videos and transfer them to a hard drive, but the vast majority went unreviewed, unseen. Not a person. My kids have never asked to see them, seemingly happy with the several thousand pictures that Jenny and I posted on Facebook, or that I forward to them from some cloud photo repository . Thinking about it, snapping all those images was really an attempt by me to stop time, to capture in a bottle every fleeting moment of the kids childhood, of our family life. Given the futility, maybe mama should have taken my Ko...

Pictures of You

I became a sucker for Robert Smith when Kiss Me! Kiss Me! Kiss Me! was released in 1987. I was 20, and 6 albums behind. I got the deep catalog around 1999, when Napster, coincidentally, was in existence.  I'm sitting alone in this big house listening to angsty 80s English pop. Leiney has headed back to Bellingham, or is after she finishes work. Abby is at a concert at The Vera Project.  Jenny is heading home from dinner at Ivars with her NY friends. Last night I learned the woman married to the hedge fund guy just bought Don Imus' apartment on 67th for 10 million bucks and an apartment on the main floor for their kids to hang out. 10 million apparently is a steal, and they have to do massive remodeling. Money 💰 🤑.  Must be nice. I spent the afternoon hacking at blackberry bushes.  I hired a guy who finally came last week, but he did a shit job.  So, I am continuing the work.  The bushes I hacked at today are about 12 feet tall.  I want a buffer from...
