Let the Music Play

Image
I have opted over these many years to build an insular world, one that extended only to immediate family, and in a more granular sense an interior space of only me--for all of us I suppose this is the case. Even when home, if not with my kids, much of my time has been spent in my head with music. As I am sure I have written about before, I suppose because of my mom's influence and the era I grew up in, singer songwriters have been everything. From Cole Porter to the Carter Family, Lucinda Williams to Led Zeppelin, Mary Black to Mazzy Star, and on and on, I have lived in my head their music and lyrics wrapped around my thoughts, and providing structure to my memories. Nancy Griffith died (of cancer) during the COVID epidemic, as did John Prine (he of COVID after a battle with cancer). I discovered both during the early years Jenny and I were together. Around that same time I discovered Kate Wolf's work at a boheme apartment Jenny was housesitting at right next to the Safeway I u...

Bad Liver And A Broken Heart

Image
Entry 1     10:29 a.m. Today we go to the University of Washington Liver Tumor Clinic to see what, if anything they can do to help Jenny. When she told Dr. P last week, he said that he didn't know what they could do because of the circulating cancer cells--microtumors that accompany PDAC. Even if they can fix the mets on the liver, that won't solve the larger problem of pancreatic cancer. We shall see. They told her sister that they could help Jenny, so it is worth the consultation, at least.  Today her friend with PDAC gets her scan results back, which Jenny is convinced (with good reason) will not be good, given her ascites.   Can we have one day with good news?  I did manage to cheer Jenny up yesterday by showing her a report noting that while the mets have all increased in size, the two new liver mets are necrotic, meaning the chemo killed them.  So, that is a win.

Stop Breakin' Down

Entry 1.    11:54 a.m. Now, I Give My Baby, Now, The Ninety-Nine Degree First, the puppy is better.  Huge relief.  Huuuuuuge relief.  I laid with her on the floor last night, keeping the sick and lethargic puppy company, like a scared dad.  But, today, back to rambunctious and frolicking behavior.     Abby and I agreed last night we'd head over to Goodwill to buy lots of old CDs, her latest hobby--a throwback chip off the old block.  We got in my 2005 Jeep Grand Jalopy, I started the car and backed around the corner to change direction.  When I put the car back in drive, the dashboard warning light lit up like Seattle's 1st Avenue in 1985, red lights flashing everywhere.  The electronic ABS system had experienced failure. I am grateful that it didn't happen last night as I drove from my friend Paul's house down 23rd towards Montlake (after an amazingly great dinner and company, btw).  But, I am afraid its time to put the o...
