"Kathy, I'm lost," I said, though I knew she was sleeping

Entry 1 San Francisco, April 2017.   The weather the last few days has been amazing. It's nearly 6 p.m., spring starting later tonight, and the front door is wide open. There isn't a cloud in the sky, a breeze with a slight chill is blowing. Abby is downstairs, the dog isn't barking. A rather good day, I would admit.  The Cure just won't get out of my head. I really wish I could find the courage to let it all go. Moving will help, I think. Keep your fingers crossed, the odds I will move to Portland are looking better than even. The recruiter, ever optimistic, thinks I may be flown down as early as Friday. I hope not, given Abby is here, but she will understand.  Meanwhile, I learned yesterday that my lazy  boss is, well, lazy. He told me last week that he asked if my temporary status Seward Street Slides, 2017. could be extended so I wouldn't have a break in service and thus not go unpaid, and was told he could. Yesterday, he told me he was wrong. I pressed him, an...

Accident and Emergency

Image
[Note Accident and Emergency is what the call emergency rooms in the UK] have you been here waiting long?  with the others whose evening"s gone wrong have you been here waiting long? --from Accident and Emergency by Lucy Wainwright Roche   What a weekend.  Can I even remember all the events, I'm not sure.  So, Ill just touch on a couple of things. Yesterday Jenny and I spent the day together all around Seattle and Renton, ending up at the Jacob Lawrence Exhibition at SAM in the afternoon.  We went with Jane and Mike.  I like SAM much more than I used to, both its standing and traveling exhibits. Benedict Arnold In the evening, we continued hanging out, watching What About Bob, one of the great Bill Murray movies, with Leiney. We were out again this morning, Sunday, the two of us running around before we met with a financial advisor, who us helping us understand how to better plan for retirement, and who was impressed with what we have done so far.  T...

And Some Things I Want To Say Aren't Survivable Or Advisable

“And some things that I want to say Aren't survivable Or advisable Like, "Happy Birthday heroin But God, how I loved you And how I still do." -Lucy Wainwright Roche  The Ever Burgeoning Day Its Wednesday.  I want to remember these good times, from back in July 2009, in our family home.  By now things were a struggle.  Leiney was well older here than when she suggested to my mom that Jenny and I get a peace table like she used at Giddens.  Still, this was clearly a happy day.  I have to say, I wake up every day with a growing sense of doom.  I know that in a month, six months, a year or more, the foundations of this family will be shaken.  What we are experiencing now is like living in a house full of gnats.  We will be living in the center of a hornet's nest soon enough.  I would like to think that life is a farce.  But, that is true only insofar as much as The Joker is a farce. There is nothing funny or humorous about losin...

You Seem To Have Found A Way To Bring Me Down To Make Me See Just How the Problem Is Mine. If You Would Like To Be A Person Making Me Feel Worse, Well You Can Get Behind Me In Line

Happier times in Lahaina The Worst Part Is.   .  . Last night Leiney drove Abby to acting, and Jenny and I spent the evening together.  We planned to walk to Mio Posto on 55th and 35th and have dinner.  As we were leaving the person showed up who we gave the sleeper couch my mother had given us back in 2008.  (She bought it so she could spend the night at our Renton home and not drive down from Marysville 2x a week to care for the kids.  We schlepped it to California and back, to our apartment on Gwinn--where it sat largely unused in the giant sun room, and then here, where again, it sat largely unused in the office.  I guess I'm explaining because I feel terribly guilty about giving away this artifact-one last touch point connecting me to my mother's memory. Apparently, they hauled the couch on top of a car, we didn't stick around to see how that worked, but we know it did.)  We walked over to the bridge at Ravenna Park, when I realized I ha...
